Japanese Blog 1

Hello world! This is my first Japanese blog post. A big reason I chose to learn Japanese is the prevalence of Japanese art; anime is popular here among my friends, and being able to understand dialogue without subtitles is a great bragging right. Woodcut printing is another thing I thoroughly enjoy. A prime example of this style of art is the "Great Wave off Kanagawa:"

The process for woodblock printing is demonstrated by a guy who lives outside of Tokyo.

I hope that by learning Japanese I will become more acquainted with its many art forms. Hopefully in a week or two, more of this blog will actually be in Japanese.

じゃまた!

  1. こんにちわ!
That's a really interesting reason for learning Japanese. Man, I wish I could draw. (That would make my secret dream of becoming a mangaka WAY easier.) I remember on the first day of class I just glanced by you as you were drawing something and I was all like "Geez... He's good." I hope you get to show off your talent in class sometime :3

  2. The video you posted is really interesting. Woodcut printing is such a fascinating and special art form that I would like to know more about. I can still clearly remember how surprised I was when I first saw the human figure of woodcut printing.

  3. It's interesting to see how diverse the interests of our class are. Have you had a chance to do anything similar to that woodblock printing?

  4. I like how one of your reasons for learning Japanese is to brag to your friends about understanding anime dialogue without the subtitles. This is truly a noble pursuit. Also, the woodblock printing demonstration video you posted was interesting. It is incredible how intricate the prints can be.

  9. @Anthony: I've tried linocut, which is the most cost effective and closest thing to woodcut. I made a bee-looking thingy, of which I can probably dig out a picture.
